deadline > bender > reaching out to turn the past towards the future

bender

hessische str. 5 in berlin mitte

a mixed use building

(short term living + office)

Floor Area: 500 sqm

Bender is a generous gesture, a dynamic three slice composition. Three bent stainless steel ribbons embrace the old building behind, and negotiate between the neighbouring buildings, reaching out to turn the past towards the future.

Bender acts as a hinge within the urban fabric. It connects the free plan university buildings to the south with the perimeter block housing to the north. It is a futuristic element in the street, with a respectful nod towards its context.

Bender sits on a long narrow site, and is attached to the existing building in the back. It is 9m wide, 14m deep and 7 stories high. The entrance, and a tiny shop form the two feet on which it stands, between which are four parking spaces. The first four floors can either be split into 2 studio units, or left as one large space. The top two floors are joined internally into one office space with magnificent views.

Bender strives towards the future, and incorporates the past in dialogue with its neighbours.
